Do you have Mobility Problems and Need Benefits?

For an awful lot of people who suffer from mobility and disability problems it is difficult for them to know if they are getting the benefits they need and deserve.

One of the simple ways to check out what you are entitled to is, providing you have access to and can use a computer, is to log on to  the age concern benefit checker.

This can be found at www.ageuk.org.uk/benefitscheck and can answer some of your simple questions to find out whether there is money out there for you to claim.

If you are  of working age and unable to work you can claim ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) once you have gone through 28 weeks of being on SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) and you  can, depending on age get up to £71 per week for the first thirteen weeks and after that it can go up to £100.05 per week. The benefit is taxable. This is based on your national insurance contributions and may be reduced if you are claiming certain benefits or if you have a private pension.

Alternatively you may be be entitled to Income related ESA this is means tested and does not rely on your National Insurance Contributions and is not taxable. It can be paid on its own or as a top up to contributory ESA. The amount you can get depends on your income, savings, whether you are single or a couple, whether you are getting disability or carers benefits and the result of the Work Capability Assessment.

Income related ESA may also be paid to cover mortgage interest and some other housing costs.

There are available Bereavement benefits, if your husband, wife or civil partner has died you may be able to claim bereavement benefits. They are usually based on the NI (National Insurance) contributions made by the person who has passed away .

You may well be able to claim a tax free lump sum of £2000.00. As well as this if you are over 45 but under pensionable age you can claim bereavement allowance for the first year following the persons death. The amount you will get depends on the amount of NI contributions made by the deceased and also on your age.
