Life can be difficult at times and when you are suddenly confronted by the need to find a nursing home for a loved one where do you start? What sort of things do you look for should you check whether they have adjustable beds or recliner chairs for the residents, or is it more important to check what the staff are like?
One of the first things I would suggest is to use your nose! A well run nursing home will smell clean and fresh, one that smells of stale toilets is probably best avoided! If you find one that you like the look of then it is best to visit on several occasions but at different times and always unannounced, that way you will know you are getting a true picture of what it is like not a ‘staged’ one put on for your benefit.

A registered care home has to have a fully qualified nurse available on site 24 hours a day 7 days a week, not the same one all the time otherwise she or he would be worn out!
Where do you start, it can be so difficult, yellow pages perhaps, word of mouth perhaps but a better place to start would be the local council they will be able to supply you with a list of all the registered nursing and care homes in the area you want to be in. Once you have got some information from the council you can start to contact all of the homes to see if they have vacancies and that is where your troubles can really begin!

Which ever home you find remember to find out if you can put your own furniture in especially in the persons own room it will help to make them feel like it is their own, perhaps a wardrobe or a recliner chair, beds are more difficult as in nursing homes especially they may need specialised adjustable beds but it is always worth asking.
Try to find a home that is as close to you as possible for your ease of visiting do not forget that once someone moves into a home the days and nights can become very long if they do not see some one they know and care for on a regular basis.
