With so many electric adjustable beds available now making sure you get the right one can be very difficult, so perhaps we can give you a few ideas of what you may need.

Obviously one of the first things you need to consider is size and the first thing to  remember is that all adjustable beds whatever there width are 6’6″ ( 2 metres) in length. This is 3″ longer than a normal single bed or a standard double bed. So it is sensible to check that this extra length will not create problems in your bedroom, you still need to be able to get around the bed.

Most adjustable beds are sold as singles but it is possible to obtain other size such as 4’6″, 5’0″ or even 6’0″ sets. The two larger sizes normally come as single actions linked together on one base.

Though if you are thinking that you may want to sleep separately at some stage in the future it would be better to specify two single bases linked together this way you can use both beds independently.

Then you need to decide on what sort of base do you need, most bases will be available either as a shallow base on legs or as a deep base all the way to the floor with castors. The is merit in either choice the base on legs means it is easier to get close to the bed should you be  in a situation where you need to do some nursing work with the person in the bed. These sets are normally on an 8″ leg but as we found out recently that can sometimes cause problems if you have some one not very tall wanting to use the adjustable bed so now we can offer and alternative 3″ leg so making it easier to get in and out.

The deeper bases are normally fitted with castors and so can be easier to move thought obviously the weight of the frame and adjustable action with its fitted motor does mean that you will not be racing it around the room! The other benefit of the deeper base  is that you can have drawers fitted so offering extra storage space and this is very sensible if you need to use such things as incontinence pads, you will have somewhere to store them discreetly. Drawer options are either end or side drawers and some times it is possible to do a combination of both.

One further thing to consider is that most standard double adjustable beds (4’6″) come with one action and one mattress so if two of you are using it you need to make sure who has the control unit because whatever position one person chooses the other person will have to accept being there as well! As the nursery rhyme about the Grand Old Duke of York  goes when you are up you’re up and when you’re down you’re down!

It really is not as difficult to choose a bed as we may be portraying but it is sensible to get it right so the final and perhaps most important part is which mattress type to select. This can be a real dilemma but to guide you through the following different types here are a few comments about each of them.

Baynell Open coil spring interior  mattresses are the most common on the market and feature rows of springs that are  all linked together by what is known as a helical wire. This runs from side to side and all the springs act in unison, for this reason it is not really ideal to use on an adjustable bed as the helical wire is also linked to a border rode which can at times be bent out of shape when the bed is adjusted.

The answer if you wish to stay with a spring interior mattress is to choose a pocket sprung style. These mattresses have springs that are in individual calico pockets and all operate independently of each other and do not have any sort of edge rod, this makes them ideal for use with an adjustable bed.

You can also have a pocket sprung mattress coupled with memory foam and this can be a really good combination well worth trying. From there the choice moves onto the range of foam mattresses.

The foam mattress is ideal for use on an adjustable bed as there are no internal parts that can be damaged by the movement of the bed. You will normally find a choice of three different types of foam mattress.

Reflex foam which is man made and normally the softer of the foam mattresses available but very comfortable.

Memory Foam now probably the best known of all the types of foam mattresses on offer, initially designed with the help of NASA in the USA for use for on the space shuttle to help the crew to cope with the “G” pressures encountered during the launch period, it was then used in the medical services because of the fact that it could be used with patients who were  confined to bed for long periods because the memory foam prevented bed sores it was an ideal use. It then came on to general release and is now so very popular. It moulds to your body and is responsive to temperature changes. You would find it an ideal combination on an adjustable bed.

The other alternative is Latex foam made from the natural resources of the rubber tree this is normally more expensive but is also allergy free so can be of benefit to lots offer people.
