Out in your wheelchair and in need of a toilet?

So many times when you are out in your wheelchair you will find you need to use a toilet. The problem is that so many of the disabled public toilets have been vandalised and if you rely on shops and stores they are not always easily accessible are they?

A scheme is now in place called RADAR,  do not ask me why it is called that. The idea came about because so many disabled toilets, like lots of other things in life, where being damaged and vandalised for no apparent reason. So now over 400 local authorities are now part of a scheme which allows disabled toilets to be kept  locked but with access available to the disabled by means  of a special key.

The beauty of this is that the toilet facilities can be  kept in far better condition than before and normally used sensibly. There are now over 7000 toilets in this scheme around the UK and it is possible to find details of all of them on line though if you do not have internet connections your local council will normally be able to provide you details of which of their toilets are  involved in the scheme.

The National Key Scheme as it is known makes keys available either by post or you can usually obtain them from your local tourist information centre with in your local council offices. If you order them by  post then they cost the same as from your local authority which is £3.50 and well worth while for the peace of mind knowing that you will be able to find a toilet that not only is in use but is also in good condition and hopefully you will leave it that way for the next user.

Not only are local  authority toilets involved in the scheme but lots of other organisations such as the National Trust and many shops and pubs also now have added themselves into the scheme so you can be assured that you can find a facility virtually anywhere  in the UK.
